The Brothers’ Grimm tale, Hans My Hedgehog, begins with a farmer and his wife wishing to have a child, even if it is as ugly as a hedgehog. And of course you know, they should have been careful what they wished for, because that’s exactly what the farmer’s wife gives birth to. And, are they satisfied when they get their wish? An unwelcome misfit, when Hans is old enough, he asks his father to have some of his sheep, and to buy him a saddle for his rooster. Then, off he goes to seek his fortune. Some run-ins with lost kings with beautiful daughters, promises made and broken, and the discovery of enchantment ensues. By the end of the tale, Hans and all those around him are utterly transformed.

"My work in paper cutting is often influenced by fairy tales and folk stories, as stock characters and archetypes lend themselves to silhouettes. While I draw an image on the back of the paper, I am never quite sure how it will translate when turned the right way round. I feel like each cut relates to the next cut in order to give the viewer a new detail to investigate that will add to the overarching tone of the piece, and ultimately, the telling of the tale."
