Sky Marietta - Early Spring Morning
Acrylic on canvas
I have lived on campus at Pine Mountain Settlement School (place pictured in the painting) for the last 3 years. I launched an early childhood program there and also do all their illustrations and photography for their publication. My mother was a teacher at Pine Mountain in the 1960s, so I visited the campus many times while growing up in Berea. I have always loved the way the light comes onto the mountains at sunrise – it has very dramatic angles and the bare trees really light up. In the winter and early spring you also get a clear view of the ridgeline. I painted this scene over a painting I did in college and let a little bit of the under-painting show through the right hand side.
