Displayed at Revelry in August 2023
Revelry is celebrating 13 years in business by opening Tommy Wortham Rallis’ first solo show, American Made. His sculptures are made from leftover materials of a hyper-consumerist society. American Made is a nod to the origin of these items — all manufactured in the People’s Republic of China — which were found and sold in the United States. From Amazon return pallet-farms to strangers' garage sales, he harvests the objects and creates art with them before they are sent to the landfill.
“It is my hope that people will see that these toys and tchotchkes and garbage can be thoughtfully remembered. A mosaic to what they were and the potential of what they are now… together.
“There are deliberate and concrete themes within each piece but they are still abstract enough to infer your own meaning. There is conflict and harmony. Juxtaposition and complimentary ideas and emotions. I prefer the maximalist approach. Visual overload. It offers the most conclusions a viewer can come to.”
- Tommy Wortham Rallis
Each item in the sculpture is highlighted uniquely, to make an overall product that will better the consumer. Through unifying and thoughtfully composing them, these pieces, created from disavowed objects, can become greater than the sum of their parts. We hope you enjoy these sculptures and narratives within their intricate compositions.
