Shared Space by Needa Hameed
Revelry Gallery welcomes Needa Hameed for her debut gallery show, Shared Space.
Needa Hameed earned her BA in Visual Art from the University of Louisville, and has worked at Revelry Gallery for the past three years. If you've stopped by the gallery, there's a good chance you've run into her! After working as the Administrative Manager and helping get together many show openings these past few years, it's her turn to show off what she's been working on behind the scenes!
Hameed uses paint and thread to create intricate figures, featuring casual displays of intimacy in regular, day-to-day settings. Bright colors and swirling patterns are used to convey feelings of elation while depicting something as simple as sharing a cup of tea between good company.
Using thread as a primary medium is an involved process that requires the artist to spend extensive time and effort with each piece. While the image blends together from afar, upon a closer view, the intention in the placement of each line of color is clearly visible.
The depictions in the artist's work are of casual scenes from her life. It pulls from her experience with the rich culture between her family and friendships growing up - and, primarily, from her witnessing the simple acts of kindness and community around her.
